Lewisporte Fire Rescue: A Legacy of Service and Growth

Our Beginnings
Founded on April 11, 1949, Lewisporte Fire Rescue began with 20 dedicated members under the leadership of our first Fire Chief, Smith Woolfrey. Originally based on Main Street, the department made a significant leap in 1978 with the construction of a new Fire Hall on Centennial Drive. This facility provided much-needed space and improved amenities, enhancing our ability to serve the community effectively.

Modern Advancements
In 2019, the Fire Department received major upgrades, including a new section dedicated to training, new equipment, and a larger area for the Fire Rescue Fleet.

Regional Expansion
The formation of Lewisporte Regional Fire Rescue (LRFR) in 2018 marked a significant milestone, expanding our services to include Browns Arm. By October of that year, we were proudly serving Browns Arm and Porterville, increasing our membership to approximately 50 firefighters. This expansion brought a new radio/pager system and a new fire truck to the Browns Arm station, enhancing our firefighting capabilities and extending our services to Laurenceton.

Recent Developments
As of June 5, 2024, LRFR and Browns Arm stations have transitioned to a mutual aid agreement.

Today’s Operations
Currently, Lewisporte Fire Rescue serves approximately 3,300 residents in Lewisporte and 700 in surrounding areas. Our team of 33 dedicated firefighters operates 24/7, responding to emergencies and participating in community events. We hold regular training sessions every Wednesday evening to maintain the highest standards of readiness and service.

Lewisporte Fire Rescue remains committed to evolving with the needs of our community and providing exceptional service to all those we protect.
